Analysis of Farming Practices and the Role of the Cajan Pea (Cajanus cajan L. Millsp) in Local Farming Systems in Kongo Central, DR Congo

This study on the analysis of farming practices and the role of pigeon pea in local cropping systems in Kongo Central, Democratic Republic of Congo, aims to contribute to a better understanding of how this crop is cultivated in this part of the country, as well as its consumption and marketing. A survey was conducted among 60 farmers in the territories of Songololo and Mbaza Ngungu using a purposive sampling method and the KoboCollect tool. In Kongo Central, pigeon pea is mainly grown in association with staple crops such as cassava, maize, and groundnuts, using poorly managed spacing, without fertilization, and with seeds originating from previous harvests. Cream-colored seed ecotypes are the most well-known and preferred, mainly due to their taste. The species is consumed both fresh and dry, often mixed with other foods, including cassava leaves and amaranth. Its production remains low, and its commercialization is limited by weak demand and unattractive prices. Therefore, strategies to improve its production should include agricultural extension approaches aimed at optimizing farming practices and stimulating demand.
