Representation and expectations of formative supervision for improving the quality of care and service among healthcare workers
Main Article Content
Abstract
Healthcare systems in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) face a number of structural challenges, including the ongoing training of healthcare professionals and improving the quality of care. The country is faced with a number of difficulties, such as a shortage of qualified human resources, insecurity, a lack of adequate medical equipment and weak health infrastructures, all of which limit the effectiveness of care. The general objective of this study is to understand the representation and expectations of formative supervision for improving the quality of care and service among providers in the Manika health zone. This is a qualitative study based on the phenomenological approach, which took place from January 10 to February 9, 2025. It involved 10 service providers chosen according to the needs of the study. To collect the data, a survey method was used, supported by an interview technique facilitated by an interview guide and a Dictaphone as data collection instruments.
The results showed that the obstacles preventing proper formative supervision are insufficient financial means, insufficient support from partners including lack of means of transport. In order to improve formative supervision, the service providers propose to provide support in the form of supervision materials and supervisor training, and solicit technical and financial support from partners to ensure the success of this practice. As for the importance of formative supervision in the structure, the providers consider that it enables them to improve services, skills, the performance/efficiency of the health system and the quality of care.
