Abstract

This study aimed at assessing the potential of integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) in improving the yield of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus var. Clemson spineless) on the sandy soil of Kinshasa. Eight treatments were applied: T0 or Control (soil without amendment or fertilizer); T1 (560 kg.ha-1 NPK 17-17-17); T2 (10 t.ha-1 of chicken manure); T3 (2t.ha-1 of lime); T4 (560 kg.ha-1 NPK 17-17-17 + 10 t.ha-1 of chicken manure); T5 (560 kg.ha-1 NPK 17-17-17 + 2t.ha-1 of lime); T6 (10 t/ha of chicken manure + 2 t.ha-1 of lime); T7 (560 kg.ha-1 NPK 17-17-17 + 10 t/ha of chicken manure + 2 t.ha-1 of lime). The field layout design was a randomized complete block design with three replications. Growth (plant height and stem diameter at soil level) and yield (number of fruits, length of fruits, diameter of fruits, yield) parameters were measured. The results revealed significant differences across all of the parameters measured. The higher yield (4,971.1 kg.ha-1) was recorded in the T7 plots followed by T4 (4,882.22 kg.ha-1), while the Control (T0) treatment yielded the lowest (42.2 kg.ha-1). Plant growth showed a similar trend to yield. We conclude from these results that improving the growth and yield of okra in the sandy soils of Kinshasa requires applying in combination of lime, organic matter and fertilizer.
