Abstract

The global problem of access to basic sanitation is more prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, with sanitation mainly provided by
autonomous systems in sub-Saharan Africa. Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, faces the challenge of sustainable
faecal sludge management. The aim of this study is to quantify and characterise faecal sludge from on-site sanitation facilities in the Funa River
Watershed, with a view to its ecological recovery. The study collected SPA-DET (Spatially Analysable Demographic Environmental and
Technical) data from households in our Watershed and carried out physico-chemical and microbiological tests on faecal sludge along the
existing sanitation service chain. The sludge production method and the emptied sludge method were used to quantify faecal sludge in our
Watershed. The results showed that 98% of households in the Watershed have a domestic toilet, the majority of which use a manual flush. The
annual production of faecal sludge in the river is estimated at 428635.307 m3, with 34.69% of households using emptying. The study revealed
a high concentration of TSS in the trucks; COD/DBO5 ratios were between 3 and 5 at the household level and above 5 at the truck and landfill
level. Variations in pH were also observed. From this study it is possible to determine the quantity and characteristics of the sludge produced
in the Funa basin in order to select an appropriate treatment based on other local criteria.
